Egon Erwin Kisch, also known as the »Racing Reporter«,
experienced the First World War as a soldier in the Royal and Imperial
Army and participated in the Serbian campaign.
Kisch kept a detailed diary of events from his joyful departure
into the adventure of war to his serious wound on the Carpathian
front in March 1915. During the War his notes could not be published
because his accounts of life at the front and of the horrors of
war so blatantly contradicted the official version. A part of the
diary was able to be published in 1922, then the full version was
published in 1930.
