While still using the name René, the young Rainer Maria
Rilke published his book of poetry »Leben und Lieder«
in 1894. This was the first work of his that appeared by itself.
Finding a publisher for this collection of 48 poems was an uphill
struggle for Rilke. His first fiancée said that it was she
who found the money for the costs of printing.
Today Rilke’s first published book is regarded as a bibliophilistic
treasure.
